After going through last week's Olympiad, students completed a computation assessment. We will be wrapping up tomorrow with a quick return to Order of Operations. We will be finishing and discussing Practice 1-4 from last week, and 1.4B and Order of Operations Independent Practice papers tomorrow. NO HOMEWORK assigned for tonight.

Today we worked through a few review problems together, bringing all of our different computation skills into use. We multiplied and divided whole numbers and decimals, before moving on to our second "official" Mathematical Olympiad. We will go over solutions on Monday, along with completing our assessment. Have a great weekend!
We spent today analyzing, discussing and working with Order of Operations. Students learning the reason behind OoOp, and were taught an acronym for helping them remember the Order: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. We also learned about the "rule of left to right". All of these things are being put to use in tonight's homework: 1-4 Practice.
We spent today working on division of decimals. Students were given LOADS of papers to use for review and practice (4.6A, 4.6B, 4.5A, p. 40, B-38). There is NO ASSIGNED HOMEWORK for tonight, and none of those papers are going to be collected. BUT, we WILL be having an end-of-unit assessment on Monday. Please help your child review and practice using these papers, and any others they have from this computation unit.
Today introduced the final computation skill to our puzzle: dividing decimals by decimals. Use tonight's homework to review with your child how to do so. The assignment is Study Guide 4.6 #1-12 only. We are expecting an end-of-unit assessment to take place on Monday of next week!
We wrapped up the week with a lesson on "mental math": multiplying and dividing decimal numbers and a power of ten by "moving the decimal". Have your child explain why we aren't really "moving" anything, but are multiplying or dividing by powers of ten! There's no homework for the weekend, but I wanted to let you all know that I've been called for Jury Duty on Monday, so there will be a substitute. Enjoy your weekend!
Today, students took a quiz on dividing decimals by whole numbers. After finishing, they moved on to working on a Problem of the Week.Tonight's homework is to complete that problem, "Phil's Allowance" (parents please don't help - I won't be taking a grade for this, I want to see how the students do on their own), along with another sheet (1 problem) called "Powers of Ten", which involves some math about a Super Duper Shrink Ray Thingy...
Lots of practice today! We worked on how to divide with decimals until the quotient either: 1) terminates, 2) repeats or 3) rounds. We also practiced annexing zeroes to do these things. It's REALLY tricky, and may need some watching on your (parents) part. Tonight, please please please try these practice problems. They are in preparation for a QUIZ TOMORROW. If that practice goes well, students should finish Pizzazz B-55 "Daffynition Decoder".
Practice with these: 1) 27 divided by 5 2) 8.43 divided by 7 3) 105 divided by 4 4) 28.13 divided by 12 5) 129.5 divided by 13 Today, we began dividing decimals by whole numbers (after spending a little more time multiplying decimals by decimals, and learning how to draw a model of that process). Tonight's homework is 4.4 Study Guide #1-12 only.
We spent some time this morning going after our last Problem of the Week, "Insect Invaders", before working on strategies for this week's problem. We will continue with this one over the course of the week. Today's lesson was on multiplying decimals by decimals. We discussed how a factor can be less than the product in multiplication, and we modeled multiplication of decimals with a picture. Tonight's homework is 4.3A #4-18 only.
