After spending some additional time moving between improper fractions and mixed numbers, we began converting decimals into fractions. Tonight's homework assignment is to practice doing so with Practice Sheet 5.7B.

We began working with improper fractions and mixed numbers today. We defined each, and analyzed the relationship between the two. We also worked on how to convert one to the other. Tonight's homework is to complete Pizzazz exercise page C-31.
We finished our equivalent fractions exercise in table groups, before moving on to reducing fractions to simplest or lowest terms. Students began a Pizzazz practice sheet for independent seat work when we ran out of time. Tonight's homework is to complete C-27 (begun in class) and the sheet that begins, "Estimating the size of...".
Students completed the week (there is no Math class on Friday or Monday due to testing) by comparing fractions. There is no homework until our next class meeting on Tuesday.
After checking over homework from the past 2 nights and spending some time working on this week's Problem of the Week, we returned to Equivalent Fractions for a wrap, and began discussing ways to show comparisons between fractions. Tonight's homework is Pizzazz C-23, which is about comparing fractions.
We continued working on equivalent fractions today, with students trying to determine the underlying reason why we need to find a common denominator when we add fractions. Tonight's homework is to complete Pizzazz C-24.
We tried to get back into the swing of things today! First, students completed and handed in this week's Problem of the Week, "Kennel Club". We then returned to Equivalent Fractions. Students completed a Study Guide independently, then went over their answers together. We finished with an Activity about Everyflavor Beans, which groups will resume working through on Monday. Enjoy your weekend!
I collected last week's Problem of the Week ("Block Party") and assigned this week's ("Kennel Club"). Students worked on the problem for a little over 10 minutes. The PoW will be due on Friday, but they WILL have 10 more minutes in class on Friday to work on them. We spent the rest of class today working on Equivalent Fractions. There will be no additional homework, and I will not see the class for math again until Friday, due to PARCC testing.
Today we really got into fractions for the first time (finally!). We defined fractions, copied 3 different forms/examples into notebooks, did some work with Benchmarks and money (mental math), and finished off with a Task involving 2 candy shops and their prices. We had just introduced the idea of "ratios" as a method to solve the problem when we ran out of time. Homework tonight is to complete "Patterns on Number Lines". Also, keep in mind that this week's Problem of the Week, "Block Party" is due on Friday.
