Clemens Crossing Elementary School has 2 full-time Gifted & Talented Resource Teachers. Mrs. Laura Register is housed in the 5th Grade Pod area, and teaches 5th Grade G/T Math and 4th Grade G/T Math, while Mr. A.J. Nath is located in a portable and teaches 4th Grade G/T Math. Both teachers offer Curriculum Extension Units and Instructional Seminars throughout the other grades.
The G/T Program at CCES has 3 essential components. G/T Mathematics is available for students who qualify via testing and/or Placement Review in 4th and 5th Grades. Prospective participants are tested using the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAt) during a county-wide window (around December for 5th Graders, and around February for 3rd Graders). G/T Math instruction focuses on "pulling the math out" of multi-layered tasks, rather than on learning processes, which are then applied. There is a heavy emphasis on problem solving and mathematical communication, with instructional standards up to two years above grade level.
Curriculum Extension Units (CEUs) exist from Grades 1 through 5. Visit each of those pages for more detail about specific topics at each grade level. Students are invited to participate in CEU classes based on the following criteria: standardized test scores (MSA, MAP, etc.), Benchmark Assessments, In-class Performance, Background & Interest Inventories, and Teacher Recommendations. Classes are usually integrated in terms of content, and meet for anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks (2 times per week, for approximately 1 hour each). Classes typically involve homework, outside research and a culminating final project or performance piece.
Instructional Seminars are classes made available to all students (Grades 2-5) based on their interests. Classes meet once per week, typically during recess time, and do not often involve grades or extensive homework assignments. IS classes are a great way for the Resource Teachers to get to know students they might not see for CEU classes, and "Talent Spot" for students who may have interests that could be fostered. IS classes vary from school to school, and from year to year. Check the specific pages for this year's titles offered by Mr. Nath!
