Feels good to have math for two days in a row! Today, we worked a bit on understanding the terminology behind patterns and their components. It's a bit of definition-writing and understanding, which isn't the most thrilling thing in the world. To make it a bit more bearable, we are working towards an opportunity for students to create their own "youtube style" instructional videos to teach viewers what they have learned about patterns. Tonight's homework is for students to write a short draft "script" that would use an example to illustrate the definitions we learned today. We will add to that list tomorrow, and work towards a fuller, final script after that!

We returned to a review of writing expressions and equations from word sentences before discussing the last homework assignment. After another short independent practice we moved on to another Pattern Problem from Dollars and Sense. We examined a "cents" problem and identified a pattern that would get to a solution. Tonight's homework is to complete 2-11 (we did 1-12 in class).
We spent the beginning portion of today's class discussing the homework from last night, and then the Problem of the Week from last week (Zegraffes). We then worked through an interesting pattern problem, called "Dollars and Sense". Ask your child about it- it was fun! Tonight's homework is a paper called Writing Algebraic Expressions. Honestly, some students are having a hard time working their way through these, so feel free to talk them through the problems. This is one occasion where it may be very beneficial for them to have a second person to bounce ideas off of...
After going over last night's homework, we spent the rest of the class on a review of Order of Operations. Tonight's homework is to complete an Order of Operations BCR.
After completing our third Olympiad, which we began last week, we moved on to an introduction of Writing Algebraic Expressions and Equations. We worked through several examples in class. Homework tonight is a paper about Algebraic Equations. The bottom half asks students to try to solve a few - let them try, no pressure. :) The expectation is NOT that they can solve them all at this point.
No math class today, due to the Band/Strings Concert.Problem of the Week is due tomorrow morning (Zegraffes). Here's the model we copied into notebooks yesterday (if your child is a methodical writer and didn't get it all into their notebooks, they can finish copying from here! :)
First, I looked for key information in the problem. I noticed that the ratio of cereal to nuts is 5:3. This makes a total of 8 cups (5 cereal + 3 nuts). Beth needs 48 total cups for the party, so I calculated how many 8's are needed to make 48 (48/8=6). The answer is 6. This means that Beth needs to make 6 sets of 8-cup mixes. Therefore, I can multiply the original ratio by 6, which gives me 5x6=30 (cereal) and 3x6=18 (nuts). I double-checked my calculations by adding 30+18, which equals 48 total cups, and since 30:18 is still in a 5:3 ratio, my calculations are reasonable. Today, we finished our model Problem of the Week from last week by examining a good description/explanation. I will scan and upload a typed version for students who are slow writers during tomorrow's post. Homework is to complete the independent PoW, "Zegraffes", which is due Friday. We will NOT be having math class tomorrow or Friday, but PoW's WILL be collected.
We finished working with Order of Operations after reviewing last night's homework and doing a few more practice problems. Students took a quiz before moving on to beginning this week's Problem of the Week. Tonight's homework is to work on the PoW ("Zegraffes"), except for the "explanation" portion. The final PoW sheet will be due Friday.
We returned to Order of Operations today, reviewing some vocabulary and the process by which to solve equations. Tonight, students are "re-visiting" a previous assignment (Practice 1-4) with instructions to check their work with a calculator and our "refreshed knowledge". Students who misplaced that previous assignment are getting new blank sheets- they should complete 15-20 of the equations, using a calculator.
Another shortened math class today due to the two hour delay, but we got to further exploration of Algebraic Expressions. Tonight's homework is a paper called "Grapes of Math Homework Paper". This should give you a good idea of what we've been examining for the past two days. Talk your child through it, and be open to the idea that there may be more than one correct answer for the top part...
