Kindergarten
Kindergarten services are a relatively new component of the Elementary G/T Program. Four "modules" have been designed for Kindergarten. Last year, we introduced one to every Kindergarten class. This year, we have plans to expand the number of modules we are able to offer.
Each module involves a lesson that the G/T Resource teacher delivers to an entire class. All students are exposed to open-ended questioning and are encouraged to participate in higher-level thinking. During the lesson, the classroom teacher takes notes and charts student responses. This allows the teacher to "talent spot", and note students who are demonstrating sophisticated analysis of the lesson topic. The goal is for this added knowledge to enhance the classroom teacher's ability to differentiate instruction appropriately in order to meet student needs on a daily basis. Teachers are then given materials to create a "center" for students to choose to go to that will continue to foster higher-level thinking skills, based on the theme of the lesson.
We are currently implementing our Second Module: Logic and Reasoning, using the book, Tomorrow's Alphabet. I am working with Mrs. McCue's class and with Mrs. Butler's class, while Mrs. Register will be visiting the classrooms of Mrs. Hodgins and Mrs. Thomerson.
