We reviewed multiplication of fractions (paying special attention to simplifying diagonally) by doing several problems together, before students continued their work on their Candy Shop Displays. Tonight's homework is to complete 7.2 Practice C #1-21 odd only. There will be no math class tomorrow due to standardized testing.
Today groups began working on computations for their candy shop displays. Along the way, it seemed like an appropriate time to learn how to multiply whole numbers by fractions. Tonight's homework is to complete the following 4 problems: 1) 6 x 3/7 2) 2 x 5/12 3) 1/6 x 15 and 4) 5/8 x 6.
Today students took a quick assessment on adding and subtracting fractions, before moving on to work on a Task: calculating ingredients and creating labels using fractions for an imaginary candy shop. Tonight's homework is 6.5 Practice B (odd numbers only). Tomorrow there will be a quiz on the material from 6.4B and 6.5B.
Students got yesterday's quizzes back today. Good news on the conversion of improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Unfortunately, some students had difficulty with adding and subtracting fractions. Please go through the quizzes with your child to see how he/she can be helped. We will be taking a "take 2" tomorrow. Students also began working on a Candy Task, before we ran out of time. Tonight's homework is to complete 6.4 Practice B (Odd numbers only).
I was absent yesterday, so we began with a quick review before moving on to today's lesson. We began adding and subtracting mixed numbers. I'm asking the kids to convert everything to improper fractions before completing the adding or subtracting. I know it seems extraneous in some instances, but having that process "down cold" will help tremendously when they hit a subtraction problem where the fractional parts of the mixed numbers "don't work", so think of it as a little extra work on the front end saving a lot of grief on the back end, if that makes sense. We will be taking a quiz on Monday which will cover: 1) converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, and 2) adding and subtracting fractions (I handed out 2 practice papers today that students can use to "study"- C-39 and C-40. Enjoy your weekend!
Welcome back! Hope everyone had a restful, enjoyable Spring Break! We got right back into things today: this week's Problem of the Week is called "Who Bought Tickets?", and will be due on Friday. Students will have 10 minutes in class tomorrow and 10 minutes in class on Thursday to work on their PoWs. Today's lesson was a continuation from before break: converting fractions into decimals. Homework tonight is 5.8 Practice B.
