Greetings!
Historic St. Mary's City is once again holding it's "Ceremony of the Flags" as part of their Maryland Day celebration. We are looking for a 4th grade student to carry the Howard County flag and represent our county during the ceremony. The celebration will be in Historic St. Mary's City on Saturday, March 21, 2015. The winner must obtain his/her own transportation to and from the event. The chosen student will present the Howard County flag before a podium of dignitaries. They have asked for a 4th grade student to represent Howard County. In order to select a student, we are holding a writing contest.
Any 4th grade Howard County student that is interested in being our representative, should type or write an opinion letter explaining why they should be chosen to be our representative and should support their point of view with reasons and information (CCSS Writing Standard 1). The letter or essay should be no more than one page long. This is a great AUTHENTIC opportunity to have your students use the opinion writing skills they are learning in language arts.
All letters must be returned to Kim Eggborn at Central Office by Thursday, February 19th, 2015. If you are not sure the letter will arrive on time, please email or fax a copy of the letter. Fax: 410-313-5698
The winner and a runner up will be announced on Monday, February 23, 2015. The runner up will take the place of the winner should the winner not be able to attend on 3/21/15.

Howard County Gifted and Talented Parent Academy: Building Resiliency in Advanced-Level Learners
1/13/15: All interested parents are invited to attend the G/T Parent Academy "Building Resiliency in Advanced-Level Learners" at Atholton High School on Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Dr. Angela Housand, Assistant Professor and Gifted Program Coordinator at University of North Carolina Wilmington, will share her expertise.
Attaining success requires resiliency in order to overcome challenges along the way. Yet many advanced learners expect to “get the right answer” on their first attempt and once faced with truly challenging situations, give up before trying. This session provides parents with strategies to support high potential youth as they engage in the struggles that lead to meaningful SUCCESS.
